This design incorporates a garden trowel on top of a short sword, representing the differences we see in Sam at the beginning and end of the story. The words "Gardener to Guardian" also capture this concept of this transformation. When we first meet him, Sam was just a simple gardener but as he travels alongside Frodo as an extremely loyal friend, we learn how brave and devoted Sam really is. The short sword in the design is modeled after the description of the daggers found in the Barrow-downs. The detail work in the border includes two designs that mirror each other: a flower and vine on the left and the One Ring and a chain on the right.
